Before jumping in…
Remember that the resume is simply a tool. You must have a blueprint first.

Understand the process.
- Electronic review/Applicant Tracking Software
- Brief 6-15 second scan for major requirements
- In-depth review
Tailor your resume for each announcement.
- Consider your audience
- Learn how to “speak the language” of the targeted employer
- Ultimately it’s a real estate game
We’ll be using the Shift resume template for this activity, so please feel free to download it and follow along! Additionally, you can watch a step-by-step overview of the resume writing process here!
Format
- No more than 1-2 pages for a non-federal resume. Federal resumes are a different animal and should be treated as such.
- Stick with a classic black font, such as Garamond, in size 11 or 12. Check out this article on the best and worst fonts to use on your resume.
- Use .5 to 1-inch margins – otherwise, it looks like you’re trying to fill space.
- Don’t get fancy. Applicant Tracking Software can’t process complicated tables, special characters, crazy colors, or goofy doodads.
- Do NOT include an objective statement or “references available upon request.”
- Your resume should have 5 basic sections in the following order: Header, Summary, Experience, Education, and Additional Information.
